Navjot Singh Sidhu breaks silence on resignation; stays mum on joining AAP

Dealing a blow to the BJP in Punjab, Navjot Singh Sidhu on July 18 resigned from Rajya Sabha just three months after his nomination by the Modi government, fuelling speculation that he, along with his wife, could join AAP.

In what could be a blow to BJP and a consequent gain for AAP in Punjab Elections, speculations have it that Navjot Singh Sidhu might join AAP. In a surprise move, Sidhu resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 18, 2016 without citing any reason for the same. His resignation comes after 3 months of being nominated in the Upper House.

“Navjot Sidhu will address media in Delhi on July 25 before going to Mumbai for shooting. He will reveal his reason (about his resignation) to the media. Whatever he has in his mind, he will share with the media,” said Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who is BJP MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary.

12.44 pm: Soon after Navjot Singh Sidhu’s press conference, and consequential silence on whether i he is joining AAP or not, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted the following:

12.03 pm: With an explanation as to why did he quit Rajya Sabha, Navjot Singh Sidhu broke his silence for the first time today. However, he still hasn’t specified as to whether he’ll be joining AAP or not.

10.50 am: On Sunday,  Punjab BJP chief Vijay Sampla said, “Navjot Singh Sidhu is still in the BJP. Therefore the question of his return to the party does not arise. He is still in BJP and he has not resigned from the membership of BJP.”

Last week, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on indicated that there was no move yet to project Navjot Singh Sidhu as chief ministerial candidate of the AAP in the Punjab elections even as he praised the cricketer-turned-politician’s move to quit the Rajya Sabha. On the other hand, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh said that former Amritsar MP was “welcome to join the Congress, if he desired to do so”.

Navjot Kaur Sidhu,  is the sitting BJP legislator from the Amritsar-east assembly seat and is also a Chief Parliamentary Secretary (just below a minister) in the state government.
