11:20 pm: Approximately 4000 trees have been uprooted. 275 electric wood cutters and more than 100 earthmovers have been engaged to remove them. (With PTI inputs)

04:25 PM: Army personnel conduct rescue and relief operations in Chennai as heavy rainfall and strong winds lash the city after landfall.

04:15 PM: Entire landfall process will b completed during next 1-2 hours bt conditions to remain rough even after that, said National Disaster Management Authority. Massive damage caused in parts of Chennai as heavy rainfall and storm resulted in uprooting of trees, damaging vehicles and other properties.

03:45 PM: Cyclone Vardah ‘eye’ now over the city. It is 6 kilometre away from Chennai and is expected to make landfall in next 10-15 minutes, says Indian Meteorological Department. It further forecasted Chennai to get heavy rains for the next 2-3 hours. However, intensity of cyclone will reduce by tonight, IMD added.

03:25 PM: Cyclone Vardah begins making landfall, reportedly killed two people.

03: 15 PM: Chennai Suburban railway network has been suspended till further notice after Cyclone Vardah hit Chennai. Some trains arriving and leaving Chennai have been diverted and cancelled, said Anil Saxena, ADG(PR) Railways.

03:05 PM: Operations at Chennai airport suspended till 1800 hours. Wind speed at present around 100-110 kilometre per hour while Chennai recorded maximum wind speed of 192 km per hour till now, said M Mahapatra of MeT department.

02:50 PM: Cyclone Vardah makes landfall in Chennai. It would be complete in four hours.

02:40 PM: Cyclone Vardah is presently 30 kilometers East-Northeast of Chennai, said National Disaster Management Authority. Meanwhile, NDRF has deployed its six teams in Andhra Pradesh and seven in Tamil Nadu concerning the cyclone, said Santosh Kumar of NDRF.

02:15 PM: Outer periphery of cyclone Vardah touched Chennai coast with wind speed of 110-120 kilometre per hour. Strong wind caused heavy damage. Long traffic snarls were reported in affected parts of the city. Landfall to take another hour, said Indian Meteorological Department.

01:40 PM: All operations at the Chennai airport suspended till 3 PM today concerning cyclone Vardah.

01:35 PM: Indian Meteorological Department said the Cyclone Vardah is expected to make landfall between 2-5pm. Taking note of the situation, 22 diving teams have been kept standby at Visakhapatnam for immediate deployment. One Survey ship has been kept standby to undertake harbour survey in case of requirement, said Indian Navy.

01:27 PM: Cyclone Vardah’s distance from Chennai is 50 kilometers now, informed National Disaster Management Authority.

01:20 PM: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is monitoring the situation with regard to cyclone Vardah through teleconference with top officials. He assured that food and other essential commodities have been kept ready in adequate quantities.

01:15 PM: Over 9,400 people living along coast in Nellore district of in Andhra Pradesh were evacuated to relief camps. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam reviewed government agencies preparedness to face Cyclone Vardah.

12:20 PM: Cyclone Vardah likely to make landfall by 1:30 pm, said captain DK Sharma, Indian Navy chief PRO. Massive uprooting of trees was reported due to teh strong wind and heavy rainfall in the affected areas.

11: 47 AM: People living in Ennore and Palaverkadu have been asked to evacuate by Tamil Nadu Government after heavy rain and strong winds lashed northers coastal districts of the state. Several flights are diverted while departures of many are delayed at Chennai airport considering cyclonic weather.

11:30 AM: Fire broke out today at a chemical factory in Haridwar in Uttarakhand. Six fire tenders reached the spot to douse flames.

10:50 AM: Heavy rains coupled with stormy winds lashed the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. The state along with Andhra Pradesh has been on high alert as Cyclone Vardah was expected to make landfall this afternoon. The severe cyclone laid centered around 105 kilometers from Chennai at around 9:30 am today. Taking note of the current situation, over 15 NDRF teams have been positioned in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

9:24 AM: The benchmark BSE Sensex opened in red and was trading down by over 110 points at 26,636.97, while NSE Nifty was trading down by over 40 points at 8,219.95.

7:57 AM: NDRF closely monitoring situation, teams already prepositioned in Andhra Pradesh. For Tamil Nadu, we’ve prepositioned 3 teams in Chennai, 2 in Kanchipuram, 2 in Tiruvallur, one team on its way to Puducherry. We have sufficient standby reserves at Arakkonam. Closely in touch with state Govt authorities, and with other agencies like IMD: RK Pachnanda DG, NDRF.

7:54 AM: The very severe cyclonic storm Vardah is now lying at about 180 kms east of Chennai. It is moving westwards direction towards Chennai, likely to cross near Chennai by this afternoon. During the next 36 hours, rainfall would occur at many places over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Chennai,Tiruvallur: S Balachandran, MeT Director.
