Tragedy in the skies
This refers to the report, “Differences between Malaysia Airline MH 370 and Air Asia flight QZ8501 incidents” (December 29). This unfortunate incident raises the issue of training of pilots, giving them the ability to fly in turbulent weather. Turbulent weather is normal over the Indonesian airspace, as it falls under inter-tropical convergence zone. Another important issue is passengers’ right to know about the age of an aircraft—number of flight hours and flights before they fly on an aircraft. It should be made mandatory for an airline to part with this information. This unfortunate incident also raises the question—is air travel safe? The stats would show that the “missing aircraft” incidents were freak accidents. Flying is supposed to be the safest mode of travel—if safety norms are adhered to, including training of pilots. One hopes that the missing plane, and the causes behind this incident, will be found soon.
