Tax temples, churches, etc

Tax temples, churches, etc
Apropos of your edit “Divine stocks” (August 7), it is indeed time that temples and religious institutions like the Tirupati Balaji temple, the Padmanabhasamy temple, the big churches and mosques are all taxed for the money they receive. As part of separation of the church and the state, the religious institutions’ functioning in the territory of the country should be seen as the functioning of any other institution, other than those carrying out charitable work. In case the religious institutions are doing charitable work, let the portion of income diverted to be charity be made tax-free. The remaining income, except for expenses on the maintenance of heritage structures in case of some temples, churches and mosques, should be made subject to tax. If need be, special laws to govern the taxation of such institutions should be framed. Above all, the countless godmen and spiritual enterprises also need to come under the tax net.
