"Youth are jobless, children are dying. BJP came to power on false promises," Sonia said.
Addressing a rally through a recorded audio message, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday trained guns at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sonia said that Modi is trying to silence the voice of opposition, which they will not let happen. Highlighting the government’s failures, Sonia said that BJP came to power in various states on false promises. “Youth are jobless, children are dying. BJP came to power on false promises,” Sonia said. Speaking on the recent alliance between BJP and JDU in Bihar, Sonia said that people of the state have been betrayed by the formation of new government in Bihar. The Congress president added that democracy is under threat, adding, that the Opposition will fight together to save the country. Sonia addressed the rally through a recorded audio message as she did not attend the rally in person.
The rally, named as ‘BJP bhagao desh bachao rally’, saw the attendance of political heavyweights including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, SP president Akhilesh Yadav, JD(U) stalwart Sharad Yadav and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav. Earlier, RJD chief Lalu Prasad had said that rally would herald the decline of the BJP-led NDA in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. Rebel JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav, who is staring at an expulsion from the party for defying orders of not to attend the rally, was greeted warmly by Prasad who embraced him on the dais.
From Congress’ side, leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and general secretary CP Joshi were also present at the rally. The RJD chief greeted Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee and their son Tejaswi Yadav touched her feet. In what can be seen as a boost for Opposition parties, a large number of people have assembled at the rally, as seen in the pictures tweeted by various news agencies.
