A woman in Kolkata today complaint about an egg seller in the city’s Tiljala who is selling artificial plastic eggs. Taking an action on the woman’s complaint, officers of the Kareya Police Station area held the egg seller named Mohammed Shamin Ansari in their custody. They have seized the eggs and have sent them for testing. The woman’s who filed the complaint against the egg seller said, “One of my family members was complaining about uneasiness whenever she was having these eggs. We suspected something was wrong with the eggs because an odour of plastic used to come out whenever we were cooking them.”
After ordering further investigation into the matter, Mayor Sovan Chattopadhyay said, “I have heard about plastic eggs but never thought of seeing them in the city. We are taking a very cautious step and I have asked my officers to run a check at market places and poultry farms.”

The Kolkata case is not the first time when the artificial case has surfaced. Earlier several cases came to light in the state of Kerala in the Idukki district. However, the Kerala food safety authorities have dismissed the news about any artificial plastic eggs and said that it is not possible to ‘manufacture eggs in factories,’ according to an Indian Express report. The statement of the Kerala food authorities comes after a huge public fuss over plastic eggs. The authorities even collected samples of these eggs from the various outlets in Ernakulam and sent them for testing to the state laboratory as well as at the Kerala Agricultural University in Mannuthy.
Kerala State Health Minister K.K. Shylaja in an interview on Wednesday that an investigation will be launched in the case to check the truthfulness of the case.
