Mamata Banerjee vs CBI: The fight between the West Bengal government and the CBI is continuing unabated with former moving the Calcutta High Court and the latter the Supreme Court. The row started with the investigating agency’s attempt to interrogate Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar on some missing files in Sharada chit fund case. The Supreme Court will hear the investigating agency’s plea that Rajeev Kumar is not cooperating in the probe, which it says, amounts to contempt of court. The top court will hear the matter on Tuesday. These developments have come a day after West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee began a sit-in, alleging the Centre was violating federal principles.
The BJP says the events unfolding in the state are unprecedented. Addressing the media, Union minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad expressed his surprise over the fact that a police commissioner was sitting on a dharna called by the chief minister. He further said that the West Bengal CM was following the footsteps of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.
A political storm has erupted in the state since yesterday after CBI officials reached the residence of the Kolkata Police chief to question him on alleged missing files in chit fund cases. Soon after Mamata Banerjee reached the residence of the official and sat on a dharna. The city police took a few CBI officials into custody, just to release them later.
