A hospital in north Kolkata’s Manicktala area has decided to stop treating Bangladeshi patients, citing alleged atrocities on minority Hindus in Bangladesh and disrespect shown to the Indian flag.

An official of JN Ray Hospital announced on Friday that the decision would remain in effect indefinitely. Subhranshu Bhakt, a hospital representative, said, “We have issued a notification that from today till an indefinite time we will not admit any Bangladeshi patient for treatment. This is primarily because of the insults they have shown towards India.”

Bhakt also called on other hospitals in Kolkata to adopt a similar stance as a mark of protest. “India has played a significant role in Bangladesh’s independence, yet we are witnessing anti-India sentiments. We hope others will join us in this stand,” he added.

The announcement comes amid ongoing protests over attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, which make up approximately 8% of the country’s population. Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on 5 August, reports indicate over 200 attacks against the minority community across 50 districts.

The situation worsened this week following the arrest of Hindu spiritual leader Das in a sedition case. His subsequent denial of bail triggered protests in cities like Dhaka and Chattogram.

On Friday, West Bengal’s Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called for solidarity with persecuted Hindus in Bangladesh. Speaking to reporters outside the assembly, the BJP leader claimed Hindu businessmen in Bangladesh were facing a social boycott.

“I urge all Indians, especially residents of West Bengal, to show moral support to the persecuted minorities in Bangladesh. Reports of attacks, intimidation, and harassment of Hindus have escalated in recent months,” Adhikari said.

Condemning alleged acts of disrespect towards the Indian flag, he warned of economic repercussions. “The sanctity of our tricolour is paramount. We expect Bangladesh to respect our sovereignty and national pride. If such incidents continue, economic transactions with Bangladesh may come to a halt,” he stated.

India expresses concern

India has expressed “deep concern” over the situation, particularly the arrest and denial of bail to Das. On Tuesday, the government urged Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and other minority groups.
