Calling the terrorist attack in Assam’s Kokrajhar “unfortunate”, MoS Home Kiren Rijiju said, “We will make sure that all the victims are taken care of.” “This is very unfortunate and a matter of concern for us,” he said. “Peace had started prevailing in the North-east region, and the fact that such an attack has happened is a matter of concern,” he added. Reports suggest that as many as 14 people have been killed after a group of terrorists opened fire on civilians, using automatic weapons and grenades.
The situation is fluid and an encounter between the security forces and the terrorists is currently underway. Various reports suggest that the terrorists numbered anywhere between 4 to 7. Two terrorists are said to have been neutralised in the attack. They were dressed in Indian Army clothes. One AK-47 has been recovered from a neutralised terrorist. Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam’s chief minister, has briefed both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the attack. The Home Ministry is closing monitoring the situation.
More details on the attack are awaited.
