The ongoing political violence in Kerala is showing no signs of abating and in fact, if anything, it has been gradually rising in terms of the attacks that have been launched over the last few months. The latest case that has come to the fore is the one that was launched against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kannur Mandal Vice President Sushil. The BJP leader was attacked last night in Olachery Kavu. He was thrashed extremely violently and was left grotesquely bloodied. He was rushed to a hospital thereafter. After the doctors finished attending to him, his face was swollen from the beating and one of his arms is entirely cased in plaster while the other has one below the elbow. His stomach region too has been heavily bandaged, indicating that the people who attacked him took their time to beat him thoroughly and mercilessly. Doctors have said that his condition is now stable.

Over the last few months hundreds of cases of political violence have been reported in Kannur. In the action taken by the police, a number of CPM, Congress party, the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers have been arrested, but this has in no way managed to stop the violence as all these political parties look to establish their own strongholds in the region. The violence is so pervasive it has become quite humdrum in the state with attackers calmly walking into their opponents’ homes, thrashing them and leaving with impunity.
While calls have been made to maintain peace from all sides, there has been no meeting of minds on the burning issue as none of them has been willing to thrash out an acceptable solution.
