K.C. Palaniswamy, a former MP and the current member of AIADMK has written to the Election Commission asking them to not recognise the appointment of Sasikala as interim general secretary. He also asked the Election Commission to appoint an independent official to conduct polls for electing the AIADMK general secretary.
Palaniswamy also said that the Election Commission should ensure that the election for the post of General Secretary of AIADMK must be unbiased and to ensure that a fearless and neutral officer should be appointed. He added that EC should also look to stop the removal of current office bearers in order to ensure to ensure a level playing field for everyone.
He also confirmed that the authorisation letter for the nomination of party candidate has been signed by the party General secretary. “The Election Commission has to hold by-election for the R.K. Nagar constituency that fell vacant following the death of AIADMK General Secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa before June. There is the risk of the Election Commission not recognising Sasikala as AIADMK General Secretary and the nomination may be treated as invalid,” Palaniswamy said while speaking to IANS on Saturday.

He also said that he has never met Sasikala in his life and confirmed that the election to the local bodies will be held soon. “Till date I have not met Sasikala. My representation to the Election Commission has nothing to do with me not being in any official party position. Elections to the local bodies will have to be held soon where again he party’s General Secretary has to authorise the nomination of the candidates,” Palaniswamy said.
AIADMK’s spokesperson C. Ponnaiyan responded to his comments by saying that Sasikala was appointed through a formal system and under the party laws. “Sasikala has been elected as the General Secretary by the party’s General Council elected by the party members. The election of Sasikala is as per party laws. There cannot be a vacuum at the top and hence Sasikala was elected to the party post,”he told to IANS.
