Separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Saturday was arrested by police after he allegedly tried to defy restrictions and came to support a separatist-called march in the state. The authorities have detained him for a 10-day custody at Cheshma Shahi sub-jail in Srinagar.
He was arrested outside his residence when he defied his house detention and tried to participate in the Azadi march that was organized against the prevailing curfew in the state.
“He was first detained by police while trying to leave home to lead a peaceful demonstration. We came to know later he was taken away to Cheshma Shahi (a high security zone in Srinagar),” said his aide Tariq Buch.
The incident comes at a time when J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met PM Narendra Modi in the capital today. After her meeting with PM Modi, she said that PM Modi has shown his concerns for the Valley and accused Pakistan of adding fuel to the fire.
In the protests that erupted after Hizbul Mujahideen poster boy Burhan Wani’s death, at least 70 people have been killed and eleven thousand others remain seriously injured.
