NK Kalia, father of Kargil War martyr Saurabh Kalia, killed during the battle with Pakistan army, on Tuesday came up in support of Gurmehar Kaur, who is herself the daughter of a martyr Captain Mandeep Singh in the same war, after the Lady Shri Ram College for Women student received rape and death threats on social media when she raised her voice against the students of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and their attempts to allegedly stamp down on freedom of speech when they objected to JNU students arriving to attend a programme at Delhi University’s Ramjas college citing their ‘anti-national’ bent. The resultant violence was unprecedented in the university. Kalia said that the dignity of a woman is of paramount importance. He also added that the culprits must be punished. Gurmehar received rape and death threats for taking a stand against the violence and intimidation tactics allegedly pursued by ABVP.

Meanwhile, lyricist Javed Akhtar also came out in support of Gurmehar Kaur. He also responded to Kiren Rijiju’s ‘who is polluting her mind’ statement. Akhtar tweeted, “I don’t know about her but Mr Minister I know who is polluting your mind”.

On the other hand, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has demanded strict action in the case. Kejriwal in his tweet said that he will meet the Lieutenant Governor today and will also demand strict against ABVP ‘goondaism’ and rape threats that were sent to Gurmehar.

Meanwhile according to latest update, Gurmehar has decided to leave Delhi. She tweeted, “it is so sad to see that we have become this country.”

Gurmehar Kaur was also trolled on Facebook and Twitter after her video, uploaded months ago in which she pleaded for peace and said that it was not Pakistan that killed her father but ‘war’ did went viral. Earlier, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu came out in support of the student organisation and said, “ABVP is a nationalist organisation. While other organisations have different views and let them express it, why should outsiders go and disturb the peace of campuses.” Naidu added that while dissent is allowed, there should be no space for disintegration. Delhi police has confirmed that two women police constables will provide security to Gurmehar Kaur around the clock.
