Kannur Local Body Election Result 2025 Highlight: Kerala held its local body election in two rounds on December 9 and 11 this year, and the vote counting began today, December 13, from 8 am onwards. The local body elections took place in 1,199 out of the 1,200 local bodies.

In the first phase, voter turnout reached 70.9 per cent across districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam, according to Mathrubhumi. The second phase recorded an even higher turnout of 75 per cent in districts including Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
Overall, the combined voter turnout stood at 73.57 per cent, which is slightly lower than the 75.97 per cent recorded in the 2020 local body elections.

Kannur has 55 wards and in 2020 United Democratic Front (UDF) emerged victorious. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) won 19, BJP and Independent candidate just won one.
Kannur saw two mayors during the 2020-2025 term because the UDF had a power-sharing agreement between the Indian National Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Congress leader TO Mohanan served as mayor for the first half of the term, from December 2020 to December 2023. As per the internal arrangement, the mayorship was then to be handed over to the IUML, and after some disagreement and delay within the alliance, Muslih Madathil of the IUML took charge in December 2023, becoming the second mayor of the term.

In the Kerala local body elections, the LDF has made gains in the UDF’s bastion of Kannur, with trends pointing to victories in several wards.
As vote counting enters its final stage, the Congress-led UDF is edging closer to a sweeping victory in the Kerala Local Body Elections 2025, having secured 8,888 wards so far. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) remains close behind with 7,196 wards, keeping the contest competitive. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is placed third, with victories in 1,652 wards, while other parties and independent candidates together have won 1,410 wards.
As counting of votes has reached its final leg in Kerala, the result of the local body elections will be announced shortly.
The United Democratic Front (UDF) has retained its stronghold - which is Kannur - and has won big in corporation.
The Congress-led UDF is ahead across panchayats, municipalities, and corporations, with a total of 4,579 wards won. The LDF, led by Vijayan, has won 3,609 wards, while the NDA has secured wins in 931 wards.
As counting continues, results have been announced in 227 wards of the municipal corporation, 2,924 municipality wards, 4,926 grama panchayat wards, and 178 block panchayat wards.
The United Democratic Front (UDF) is leading from Kannur, its stronghold.
LDF won in 330 wards, followed by UDF in 169, and NDA in 22.
UDF has won in 1,578 wards in 23,611 wards. LDF is close behind and has won 1,168 wards.
Out of 12,000 local bodies, the LDF is leading in 121, followed by the UDF with 96, the NDA with 7, and others with 7 local bodies.
In Kannur, LDF is maintaining a strong lead, having won the majority of wards. Kannur, which is UDF's stronghold, is losing ground.
“… We are very confident that the BJP will secure a good margin in the central Kerala belt, and we will also achieve a strong victory this time in South Kerala,” BJP leader Shaun George said.
He added that people will shift their support to the BJP this time.

The counting is underway at 244 centres across 14 districts and is being monitored by the State Election Commission.

Elections were conducted in 17,337 wards across 941 grama panchayats, 2,267 wards in 152 block panchayats, and 346 wards under 14 district panchayats. In urban areas, polling took place in 3,240 wards across 87 municipalities, along with 421 wards in six municipal corporations, where voters elected their representatives.
