Kairana by election result 2018 highlights: What appeared to be a close battle between BJP candidate Mriganka Singh and RLD candidate Tabassum Hasan in Kairana by polls has turned into a one-way traffic with RLD registering a comfortable win. Mriganka Singh while conceding the defeat said that many voters did vote for BJP but with a lead of some thousand votes alliance has won. “I would like to congratulate the candidate. The alliance has emerged strong and now we have to prepare better for future,” she said. The counting had started at 8 AM on Thursday for Kairana by-elections which were held on May 28 after the seat fell vacant due to the death of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Hukum Singh.
Mriganka had also contested the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls from Kairana Assembly seat but lost to Samajwadi Party’s Nahid Hasan by over 21,000 votes. Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) have joined hands to defeat BJP and came up with Tabassum Hasan as their candidate. Other parties like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Congress did not contest in the bypoll to prevent split of votes.
Both Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal, as well as the ruling BJP, had raised claims of electronic voting machines (EVM) tampering at polling booths in Kairana after which the election commission had ordered a re-polling. The repolling began on Wednesday at 7 AM and went in till 5 PM in 23 polling stations at Nakur, 44 in Gangoh and one station at Thana Bhawan in Saharanpur and five in Shamli.
