In a massive setback to the Congress in Gujarat, two more MLAs resigned on Friday taking the number of legislators who quit to five. This comes after three legislators resigned from the Congress yesterday and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Maan Singh Chouhan and Sana Bhai Choudhari are the two MLAs who resigned today from the Congress. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha was adjourned briefly for the third time as Congress continued noisy protest over the alleged abduction of its MLA by Gujarat police. This comes at a time when Rajya Sabha election is around the corner in Gujarat. Earlier today, BJP chief Amit Shah filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat. The BJP chief who has never been a member of Parliament filed his nomination papers at the state capital Gandhinagar. Currently, Shah is an MLA from Gujarat’s Naranpura constituency. Apart from Amit Shah, two more BJP leaders filed their nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections including Union Minister Smriti Irani.
The resignation of Balwantsinh Rajput (who was also the chief whip), Tejashreeben Patel and Prahlad Patel reduced the Congress’s tally to 54 in the 182-seat assembly. It was a big blow to Congress days after it announced Ahmed Patel as its candidate for the Upper House in the election scheduled for August 8. Even though the Congress nominee needs 47 votes to win the election, cross-voting like the Presidential election might make things tricky.

Sana Bhai Choudhari gave me his resignation. Maan Singh Chauhan gave me his resignation today. No one has asked for the time, whoever will come to my office, I will talk to them,” he added.
