With an aim to attract foreign investment in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will go on a four-day visit to Italy and Germany in September. She had been invited to Germany by chambers of commerce industry and in Rome by the Mayor. Interestingly in her 29-member business delegation, will also be present, Tata Metalinks MD Sanjiv Paul and Tata Steel India and South Asia MD TV Narendran. Tata Group and Mamata government have been at loggerheads ever since they are involved in a dispute in the Supreme Court over the Singur land issue.
According to reports in The Indian Express, the two have been taking steps to mend the relations between them. In a report, it said that Mamata government had brought in an ‘unofficial emissary’ to initiate dialogues between the two. The dispute which has been going on for 8 years looks to getting eased, especially after the CM in March had said that she was ‘willing to talk’ and also willing to give 600 acres of land in Singur to set up a plant. Tata trust’s initiative with Google, to teach about computers to women in West Bengal, have been promoted by the government. The government has also highlighted how Tatas are creating jobs in the state.
The Indian Express quoted a senior official as saying, that Paul and Narendran’s presence in the business delegation was a ‘clearer indication’ that things are getting better. “Ultimately, both parties will want a solution that is to their benefit. The government has also changed its stance towards industries, particularly now with its land bank,” the official was quoted as saying.
