President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday expressed relief that the members of the Afghanistan Parliament are safe after the building was attacked by Talibani militants, adding that India will always stand with the Islamic Republic in its fight against extremism.
The official twitter account of the Rashtrapati Bhavan shared the President’s thoughts.
“It was a relief that all Members of Afghan Parliament who had been present in the building are safe #PresidentMukherjee,” it posted.
“People of India will always stand by the brave people of Afghanistan in their fight against violence and extremism #PresidentMukherjee,” it added.
Kabul Police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi earlier confirmed that a car detonated outside the Parliament earlier today, followed by a series of explosions which resulted in the immediate evacuation of MPs and journalists from the Parliament.
The attack took place as the new Defence Minister Massoom Stanekzai was being introduced to the MPs.
At least nine explosions were heard within a span of half an hour along with sporadic gunfire.
Security forces were deployed to the area to try to bring the situation under control, said the Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.
All seven attackers involved were killed by the special forces after a siege that lasted over an hour.
