After a shoe was hurled at Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia by Congress MLA Tarlochan Soondh during the Punjab Assembly today, the former said that such an attempt shows Congress’ desperation and such attempts might be seen in the future as well.
“Whatever happened today, it shows Congress’ desperation. The party is fast losing ground, and we might see such desperate steps from them in near future also,” said Majithia. The minister was attacked during a protest by Congress MLAs, who wanted a no-confidence motion to be taken up for discussion in the Assembly. Protesting Congress MLAs also threw papers and pages from CAG reports at the Speaker, who had to be protected by the House staff.
On the other hand, Tarlochan Singh said, “I didn’t hurl shoe at Majitihia, I threw it towards Virsa Singh Valtoha as he abused me and my caste.”
In a first of its kind, protest in the state by the Congress MLAs came after a chaotic hour on Monday afternoon in the House during which the party’s no-confidence motion against the government was defeated by voice vote without a discussion. The MLAs decided they would not leave the house until the Speaker promised that a debate would be allowed when the House meets again on Wednesday, after Tuesday’s Eid holiday. As a consequence of which, 27 MLAs including four women, led by CLP leader Charanjit Singh Channi, dug in for the long night in the house.
As the House reassembled today to meet after a holiday on account of Eid yesterday, the opposition Congress members immediately raised their demand before the Zero Hour could be resumed. Heated exchanges were witnessed between ruling Akali-BJP benches and the Congress members.
