In a major success for the Punjab Police, the state’s most-wanted gangster Vicky Gounder and his associate Prema Lahoria were killed in an encounter today, IG Bathinda Mukhwinder Singh Chhina has said. Gounder was among six prisoners who escaped from Nabha Jail in 2016. As per Chief of Organised Control Crime Unit (OCCU) Inspector General Nilabh Kishore, Gounder was hiding inside in a house in Ganganagar district in Rajasthan . Both gangsters were shot dead in the evening. The place of encounter was 50 km from Gounder’s village Sarawan Bodla in Muktsar district.
In the meantime, it has come to light that another person was also both gangsters, who was injured during the gunbattle, said OCCU AIG Gurmeet Chauhan, who led the police party. A sub inspector and assistant sub-inspector also sustained injuries during the encounter, said IG Kishore. However, it is still unclear under circumstances gangsters were killed.
Gounder was nabbed in December 2015 as a prime suspect in the murder of gangster Sukha Kahlwan. He was put in the Nabha jail after a clash with a rival gang in Ropar jail. Four of the six who had run away along with him from the prison and at least 26 others, both inside and outside the jail, who helped six escape the jail were arrested. But Gounder continued to be on the run. Another prisoner Kashmir Singh who had also escaped along with them is also still at large.
Gounder had a number of highway robbery cases against him in Punjab and numerous cases in Rajasthan and Haryana also . He was once won three gold and two silver medals in discuss throw at the national level. Gounder had also joined Speed Fund academy in Jalandhar for training and studies. However, he involved himself in petty fights, after this he left the academy and engaged in a number criminal activities.
