Hisar sizzles at 47.8 deg C as heat wave sweeps Haryana and Punjab

Hisar today recorded a maximum of 47.8 degrees Celsius, seven notches above normal, which was the hottest this season. Yesterday it had recorded a high of 45.6 degrees Celsius and experienced 46.8 degrees Celsius on May 18.

“The hottest day in recorded history in Hisar was on May 26, 1998 when the maximum temperature had shot up to 48.8 degrees Celsius. In May 2010, Hisar had recorded 48.1 deg C,” a MeT official told PTI here.

Most of the other places in Haryana, including Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rohtak and Bhiwani also remained in the grip of heat wave, with temperatures hovering between 42 and 46 degrees Celsius.

However, Ambala and joint capital Chandigarh, which were hit by a dust storm last evening, today registered a marginal decrease in maximum temperatures which settled at 39.1 degrees Celsius and 40.5 degrees Celsius, respectively.

In Punjab, the holy city of Amritsar experienced intense heat, with maximum temperature today settling at 44.6 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal.

Ludhiana also had a hot day at 42.4 deg C, up three notches, while Patiala’s maximum settled at 41.5 deg C.
