Himanta Biswa Sarma, architect of BJP’s Assam victory, appointed NDA convenor of North-East

Himanta Biswa Sarma has been appointed as convenor of a newly-floated North-East Democratic Alliance.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the architect of BJP’s historic victory in Assam, adds another feather in his cap with appointment as convenor of a newly-floated North-East Democratic Alliance.

The new platform of the BJP was formed for development of all northeastern states, hours after Sarbananda Sonowal was sworn-in as the 14th chief minister of Assam.

The alliance was formed at a meeting chaired by BJP president Amit Shah and attended by Sonowal and his Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Sikkim counterparts Kalikho Pul, T R Zeliang and P K Chamling respectively.

The meeting was also attended by BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav and BJP North East Zonal Organising secretary Ajay Jamwal.

 

“This alliance will be called North East Democratic Alliance. I congratulate Shri @himantabiswa on being declared as Convenor of NEDA,” Shah later tweeted.

“Main objective of the NEDA will be all-round development of North East and better co-ordination among the states and central govt,” he said in another tweet.

 

“CM of Assam,Arunachal Pradesh,Nagaland and Sikkim proposed to join an alliance of non-congress parties in N.East,” he further said.

 

Sarma, a former Tarun Gogoi aide who quit Congress last year and was a key strategist in BJP’s campaign, also took oath as minister on Tuesday. Sarma had fallen out with Gogoi after the latter introduced his son Gaurav to politics in 2012.

Sarma passed his High School Leaving Certificate examination from Kamrup Academy Higher Secondary School, Guwahati in 1985 and joined Cotton College, Guwahati for further studies. He did his graduation in 1990 and post graduation in 1992 in political science from the Cotton College, Guwahati. Sarma did LLB from Govt. Law College, Guwahati and obtained Ph.D degree from Gauhati University. He was practicing law at Gauhati High Court from 1996 to
. He was elected from Jalukbari in 2001 and was re-elected in 2006 and 2011. Sarma has served in the Assam government as minister (both in state and cabinet rank) in Planning & development, Finance, Health & education etc from 2002 to 2014.
