Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi suffered a cardiac emergency late Thursday and was rushed to a private hospital in Mohali, where he underwent bypass heart surgery, according to a report by The Indian Express.

The 1990 batch IAS officer is currently under observation at the Fortis Hospital, Mohali.

In a statement Fortis stated, ‘Shri Anurag Rastogi, IAS, Chief Secretary, Haryana, was admitted for bypass surgery at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, on January 9, 2026. Following an uneventful surgery, Shri Anurag Rastogi is stable and recovering in the CTVS Intensive Care Unit.” Indian Express quoting sources reported that Rastogi has been advised bed rest for at least a couple of months.

Senior bureaucrat with long tenure in Haryana administration

Rastogi has been one of the most senior officers in the Haryana cadre and has had several key portfolios over the years. Before being appointed as Chief Secretary, he served as Financial Commissioner (Revenue) and Additional Chief Secretary (Finance and Planning), positions that positioned him at the center of the state’s fiscal and administrative decision-making.

The Haryana government appointed Rastogi as the state’s Chief Secretary after the exit of Vivek Joshi, 1989 batch IAS officer who was appointed as an election commissioner. The government order, as stated by PTI, mentioned that Rastogi would continue to hold the post of Additional Chief Secretary (Finance and Planning) along with his role as Chief Secretary.

Joshi was appointed Haryana chief secretary on October 31, 2024, after being repatriated from the Government of India. His tenure was for a short period, lasting over three months, before his elevation to the Election Commission.

Rastogi’s service period was extended

Rastogi was originally slated to retire on June 30, 2025, but the Centre approved a one-year extension of his service on the recommendation of the Haryana government. He was permitted to continue in his office until June 30, 2026.

Rastogi played a major role in revenue administration and financial management in Haryana. His appointment as Chief Secretary came at a time of administrative transition following changes at the senior-most level of state bureaucracy.
