In the Gurmehar Kaur ‘freedom of speech’ row, in which she has been tagged as ‘anti-national’ at best and ‘pawn in others’ game’, has jumped the former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar who was under the spotlight last year in a sedition case for raising anti-India slogans for which he was later arrested along with other JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya. Today he came to participate in the protest against ABVP for its alleged role in looking to stamp down on dissenting views through threats, especially after the Gurmehar row exploded onto the national consciousness. Kanhaiya lashed out at ABVP for disrupting the Ramjas seminar and creating chaos in the university. Kumar demanded to know as to who gave ‘them the right to beat people’.
Former JNUSU vice president Shehla Rashid also joined the protests. In February 2016, she was arrested and charged with sedition by the Delhi police for allegedly raising anti-India slogans in a student rally. Also, before the arrival of Kanhaiya Kumar at Ramjas College, the student took out the rally and sung ‘Hum Honge Kamayab’.

In between the protest, the union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that he will raise the DU terror in Parliament, meanwhile, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also assured that all those who ‘abuse’ the nation will be arrested.
Earlier in the day, Gurmehar Kaur announced her decision to withdraw from the campaign against Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and leave Delhi for Punjab even as the Delhi University braced for protests and counter-protests.
