Babita Phogat has become the latest celebrity to enter the war of words being fought on social media in recent Gurmehar Kaur row. Kaur, daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, changed her Facebook profile picture holding a placard which read “I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP”.

“The brutal attack on innocent students by ABVP is very disturbing and should be stopped. It was not an attack on protesters, but an attack on every notion of democracy that is held dear in every Indian’s heart. It is an attack on ideals, morals, freedom and rights of every person born to this nation,” she said in a Facebook status.

“The stones that you pelt hit our bodies, but fail to bruise our ideas. This profile picture is my way of protesting against the tyranny of fear,” she added. After her post, Virender Sehwag trolled Kaur on Twitter, with a tweet that went viral. To this, actor Randeep Hooda issued an applauding response. However, the actor drew more flak. In the same row of responses, journalist Rana Ayyub said that Randeep trolled Gurmehar “for being a Haryanvi”.

“RaisinaSeries haryana ke hain na. Doing his bit for emancipation of women,” Rana Ayyub wrote. To this, wrestler Babita Phogat responded: “Haryana ki hi hain hum Phogat sister bhi. Kya jante h aap haryana k bare me.”

Hooda, later justified his action by sharing a Facebook post mentioning, “Don’t hang me over a laugh”. Earlier after former cricketer Virendra Sehwag trolled Gurmehar over a video she posted on social media, last year, Randeep Hooda also engaged in the Twitter war saying “She (Gurmehar) is being made a pawn”.

Justifying his stance on the matter Randeep Hooda, over a post in Facebook, said, “Viru cracked a joke and I admit I laughed. Damn!! He is so witty and this is one of the other million things he’s said that has made me crack up. That was it!!”
