Residents of Gurgaon have applauded the efforts of the city police in dealing with the massive jams on several roads due to ongoing spell of rain. In several parts of the city, police were seen standing in knee-deep water for hours while directing vehicles. The policemen at several places were also seen helping commuters and lending their hands in pulling out vehicles stuck in potholes. Blaming the infrastructure for such downfall, Dr Shalini Gupta tweeted: “Traffic jam all around in Gurgaon but the efforts made by Gurgaon police are commendable. The state infrastructure is such a downfall.” A user, Parul Bhatnagar, wrote on Twitter, “Though Gurgaon is jam, but Gurgaon police are doing great job.”

The city police were also active on the social media asking people not to panic.  When rumours spread that prohibitory orders have been issued in the Millenium City in the wake of rain and traffic jams, police appealed to people through social media informing them that the orders were issued only to restore normalcy. The order issued by the district magistrate under section 144 of CrPC asked all civil agencies to “requisition all infrastructure equipment at benchmark rates so as to reposition roads, traffic congestions and other necessary actions.” The order also called for closure of schools for the next two days and for other arrangements to bring normalcy to the city.

The flood-like situation has raised questions over the civic administration of the city as well as the “faulty” planning. However, role of police was commended. Kapila Sharma Kalhan wrote, “Well done and thank you for the effort. It is easy to criticize but great to see you come to everybody’s rescue.” The city police also posted pictures of places which were cleared for the traffic. One user Avadhesh tweeted, “Hats off to you guys. Have thanked all policemen on my way to home and office. Wish we could do more.” User Pramod Kumar Singh said, “Police is the saviour while civic agencies are clueless. Police is not there to clear drains yet they are doing.”

Another user Rohit Sharma said, “Big claps for COPS as they are doing their efficiently in this situation. #respect”
