Gujarat weather Highlights: Cyclone Ockhi on Tuesday moved closer to the southern coast near Surat in poll-bound Gujarat. As per MET department, the cyclone is expected to make landfall in the state around midnight today. As per the latest forecast, the cyclone was only 390 kms away from Surat, centred in the Arabian sea. The local MeT centre said the cyclone was likely to continue moving north-northwestwards. Meanwhile, cyclone Ockhi, poured cold water on election campaigning on Tuesday, leading to the cancellation of rallies of several by many top leaders, including those by BJP chief Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. PM Modi has appealed to BJP workers to lend a helping hand to those who are likely to be hit by the cyclone.

8:43 pm:  Cyclone Ockhi around 350 km south-SW of Surat,it is expected to cross tonight. It is showing sign of decreasing in intensity.Issued heavy rainfall alert in coastal districts only for tonight, wind speed expected to be around 65-70 kmph when cyclone cross: Director, IMD Ahmedabad.

Damage Expected over south Gujarat (Valsad, Surat, Navsari, Bharuch, Dang, Tapi, Amreli, Gir- Somnath, Bhavnagar districts), Daman, Diu, and Dadra, Nagar Haveli and north Konkan Districts of Maharashtra (Palghar, Thane, Raigarh, and Greater Mumbai):

Minor damage to loose / unsecured structures, breaking of tree branches, uprooting of small trees. Minor damage to Banana trees. Some damage to agriculture near coast due to salt spray. Damage to ripe paddy crops. Minor damage to Kutcha embankments.

5.59 pm: The cyclonic storm ‘OCKHI’ over eastcentral Arabian Sea moved further north-northeastwards with a speed of 21 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 1130 hrs IST of 05 th December, 2017 over eastcentral Arabian Sea near Latitude 18.5º N and Longitude 71.0º E, about 350 km southsouthwest of Surat and 200 km west-southwest of Mumbai. It is very likely to continue to move northnortheastwards,
weaken gradually and cross south Gujarat and adjoining north Maharashtra coasts near Surat as a deep depression by tonight, the 5
th December 2017.

5.40 pm: Earlier in the day, PM Modi had tweeted: “With #CycloneOckhi expected to make a landfall in Gujarat, I appeal to @BJP4Gujarat Karyakartas to focus on helping people across the state. Our Karyakartas should devote themselves to providing all possible assistance and stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow citizens.”

5.38 pm: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweets, “My thoughts are with people who will be braving the onslaught of #CycloneOckhi. Urge Congress leaders and workers in Gujarat to provide all necessary help and support to the needy during this hour of crisis.”
