Gujarat Assembly Election 2022 Phase 2 Highlights: A moderate voter turnout of 60.94 per cent was recorded in the second and final phase of the Gujarat Assembly elections that took place on December 5. Election to 93 Assembly constituencies was held on December 5 across 14 districts of north and central regions on Monday. In the 2017 Gujarat elections, the voter turnout was recorded at 70 per cent. Polling in the second phase went off peacefully yesterday, barring a few incidents of violence, the Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Bharathi said. A total of 833 candidates were in the fray for the final phase of polls. With the December 5 polls, voting for all the 182 Assembly seats in Gujarat has been completed, and the results will be announced on December 8.

The first phase of elections was held on December 1 which had covered 89 Assembly constituencies, and the voter turnout was registered at 63.31 per cent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) chief ministerial candidate Isudan Gadhvi and Leader of Opposition in the outgoing Assembly Sukhram Rathva of the Congress were prominent among those who exercised their franchise.

Supporters of the Congress and BJP candidates from Danta Assembly seat in Gujarat's Banaskantha district allegedly clashed with each other after a collision between the vehicles of the two leaders, police said on Monday.

No one was injured in the incident which took place at around 10.30 pm on Sunday, Banaskantha Superintendent of Police (SP) Akshayraj Makwana told PTI.

SP Makwana said Kharadi, the sitting MLA from Danta seat, and BJP nominee Latu Parghi levelled allegations that they were attacked by each other's supporters with deadly weapons after a collision between their vehicles.

Danta, reserved for the Scheduled Tribe candidates, is one of the 93 seats where voting is underway on Monday in the second phase of the state Assembly elections. (PTI)

Gujarat Phase 2 elections: 61 political parties take part in second phase

In the second phase, 61 political parties have taken part, including the BJP, Congress and AAP. The nominees also include 285 independents, as per the state election body.

The BJP and AAP are contesting in all 93 seats, and Congress is contesting in 90 seats and its alliance partner NCP has fielded candidates in two seats.

Among other parties, the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) has fielded 12 candidates and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) 44.

In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections, the ruling BJP won 51 out of the 93 seats, Congress 39, while three seats were won by Independents. Campaigning for the second phase of polls ended on Saturday.
