The government’s flagship ‘Namami Gange’ programme aimed at cleaning and protecting the holy river in a comprehensive manner got a R20,000 crore boost on Wednesday, with the Cabinet clearing the Budget outlay to be made over the next five years.
The five-year outlay is five times the amount spent in the last 30 years towards conservation of the national river.
Ganga rejuvenation is a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it was also one of his major electoral promises. The government had in the Budget for 2015-16 also announced a Rs 2,040 crore “Ganga Mission”
Namami Gange will focus on pollution abatement interventions.
