Atleast 15 people have died in Gopalganj district in Bihar after drinking toxic liquor. A total of 17 people have been arrested so far. One of the injured people has succumbed to his injuries while others are still under treatment.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said,“We are concerned about Gopalganj tragedy, strict actions will be taken against the people behind this.” He also added that Rs 4 lakh will be provided to the victims of the tragedy if it was found that people died due to spurious alcohol.
The families had said that the men complained about uneasiness and breathlessness along with stomach ache and vomiting after consuming local alcohol in the afternoon. The incident alarmed the state as liquor had been outlawed by the Chief Minister as a part of his election campaign mandate.
After the raising concerns over illegal alcohol circulated within the state, Gopalganj district officials had ordered a probe into the incident. According to Additional Director General of Police Sunil Kumar, atleast 4,707 people were arrested in the past four months for flouting the liquor ban and illegally smuggling alcohol in the state.
