At least 50 people are believed to be missing after an old bridge in Goa’s Curchorem town collapsed late on Thursday evening. As per IANS, state Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had requested Indian Navy and Coast Guard divers for assistance in the rescue effort. South Goa District Magistrate Swapnil Nail was quoted as saying by IANS that the exact count of people who are missing was not yet known yet and a sub-divisional officer had been sent to the site. The agency also quoted Director General of Police Muktesh Chander as saying that the exact count of persons missing since the mishaps had not been confirmed.
11:20 pm: “A metallic old bridge on the river has collapsed where about 40 persons had gathered,” Shekhar Prabhudesai, superintendent of police in South Goa, who is heading the rescue operations, told Reuters over the phone. “The number of casualties is still not known,” he said.
10:38 pm: “While the rescue teams have recovered two bodies from the river so far, at least 30 people are still missing. Some of those who fell into the river managed to swim ashore,” the police was quoted as saying by PTI.
