The appointment of Gita Gopinath as the financial adviser to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has raised a lot of questions within CPM. Pinarayi Vijayan became the Kerala CM after his party CPM won the state elections earlier this year. The appointment of Gopinath has created a stir within the party for the simple fact that her opinion and economic viewpoints are in stark contrast to that of the CPM. Gita Gopinath is a Professor of Economics at the Harvard University and is widely known to be a neoliberal market economist.

According to an Indian Express report, CPM’s central leadership has asked for an explanation for the choice of financial adviser by Kerala government. Many believe that the appointment should have been made with political consensus. A senior CPM leader has said that Gopinath’s approach and opinions are directly opposite to the party line on many crucial economic issues, the report said. The leader is believed to have asked how a CPM government, that is against neoliberal policies, can choose a market economist like Gopinath. While senior party members in CPM may have their reservations and objections, the party general secretary Sitaram Yechury has said the decision is that of the state government. He said that the Kerala party will answer on this issues, if the need arises.

On his part, Pinarayi Vijayan is firm on the decision. Stating that Gita Gopinath is a world renowned economist from Kerala, Vijayan said that her knowledge is likely to be useful for the state in many ways. Rubbishing the worries that Gopinath’s economic views would differ from that of his government, Vijayan said that as long as his government’s stand is clear, there is little need to worry about varying point of views. Gita Gopinath is the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and of Economics at Harvard University. Her research focuses on International Finance and she has done her PhD from the Princeton University under the guidance of Ben Bernanke.
