Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has sacked mining minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati, according to reports. A formal notification in this regard is expected to be announced soon. The controversial minister was considered to be close to the CM .
Prajapati has been facing several graft charges. He was in the news in March this year after it surfaced that his daughter was one of the alleged beneficiaries of the ‘Kanya Dhan Yojana’ under the BPL category.
The UP government’s scheme is solely for girls of poor families. However, Prajapati was allegedly taking the benefit of the scheme for his daughter despite being a millionaire. In the 2012 Assembly election affidavit, Prajapati had declared that his property was worth over Rs 1.83 crore.
Presently, Prajapati is under the Lokayukta scanner over the graft charges against him. Prajapati was appointed mining minister by the Akhilesh government in 2013. He is accused of amassing more wealth than his known sources of income, besides several other charges.
Apart from Prajapati, Panchayati Raj minister Rajkishore Singh was also sacked by the chief minister. Singh is facing graft charges in land grab and check-dam scam.
The move is being seen as an attempt by the Akhilesh government to clean up its image ahead of the Assembly elections next year. However, it may to too late.
