Mukta Tilak, a descendant of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak is all set to become mayor of Maharashtra city of Pune, after being nominated for the post by BJP. The 51-year old was elec ted for the fourth successive time to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).Rohit Tilak, her nephew and grandson of Jayantrao Tilak, is a Congress leader. He contested the assembly polls on a Congress ticket two twice, failing to win each time. Jayantrao Tilak was the state Legislative Council chairman, the post which had eluded Mukta Tilak 10 years ago, a report by ‘The Indian Express’ has said.

The BJP had put her into the contest for the mayor’s post in 2007, in a hung house in the PMC. However, Tilak had withdrawn from the contest because of a political strategy by her party, to ensure that Congress was thrown out of power in the civic body. In fight for the power, the Congress at that time had offered support to Mukta Tilak for the post of mayor, to keep the NCP out of power.

After a fight between NCP leader Rajlaxmi Bhosale and Congress leader Shailja Khedekar, the NCP had come to power with support from the Shiv Sena, with the BJP supporting it indirectly by deciding to stay abstain, in order to defeat the Congress candidate.

By nominating the Tilak descedent, the BJP has tried to simprove its base through a member of the highly-respected Tilak family, so that the city becomes a BJP stronghold. Tilak has been in the PMC for the last 15 years.
