Tamil Nadu crisis: All eyes are on Governor C Vidyasagar Rao over the swearing-in of the new Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after Edapaddi K Palaniswami and rival O Panneerselvam met him with claims of majority support of AIADMK MLAs. AIADMK legislature party leader Palaniswami, who had called on the Governor to stake claim for forming the government, met him again this evening, with his camp claiming support of 124 of the party’s 134 MLAs. Tamil Nadu has a 234-member legislative assembly. Notably, AIADMK chief V K Sasikala was sent to jail after she had surrendered before a trial court in Bengaluru, after the Supreme Court restored her conviction in the two-decades-old disproportionate assets case.

Political parties have kick-started high-decibel campaigning for the third phase of polling for Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2017. 69 constituencies will go to polls in third phase of voting which will be held on February 19. 826 candidates are in the fray for this phase which is crucial for BJP, Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance and BSP. The other four phases will be held on February 23 and 27 and on March 4 and 8. Results will be out on March 11. Meanwhile, an impressive turnout of over 65 per cent was recorded in 67 Assembly constituencies across 11 districts of western Uttar Pradesh, figuring in the second phase of the crucial state polls yesterday.
