If it was not so serious in nature, an incident that happened today could have been termed as ‘amusing’. But unfortunately, it cannot be so labelled. In Sangam Vihar a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM dispensed fake Rs 2000 notes. It had ‘Children Bank of India’ emblazoned all across it instead of the customary Reserve Bank of India. The incident soon enough reached the Net and quickly went viral. The shock, amusement and rage expressed by the twitterati literally broke the internet. The notes dispensed from the ATM are almost identical to the real paper currency until someone looks into the discrepancies. According to a Hindustan Times report, a call centre employee was the first one to realize that the Rs 8000 in new currency notes withdrawn by him from Sangam Vihar ATM were fake after which he immediately approached the police station. The police confirmed the matter. Policemen were called and a case has been lodged. Authorities are looking for the wrongdoers, from the cash dispensing personnel, to the officials in banks, or others who may have had access to the notes, the scanner is on a number of people to quickly identify and catch the culprits. The State Bank of India has issued it’s statement regarding the fake currency matter. In it’s statement SBI has said, ‘ No fake note likely to be dispensed through the SBI ATM at anytime.’ SBI statement claimed that it has a very robust monitoring system and Sangam Vihar complained never approached them according to the statement. SBI said that it is examining for fake notes in other ATM’s as well but the possibility of fake notes from SBI ATM is bleak. From the common man to top leaders like Sitaram Yechury and Arvind Kejriwal criticised the government over the incident. Check out the tweets – from the horrific to the hilarious:
