In the dock over alleged fake degree row, AAP MLA Surinder Singh today claimed being a “victim” and not a culprit, saying the university from which he got the degree turned out to be “dubious”.
He also admitted to have made a mistake in the affidavit by stating the wrong name of the university.
Addressing a press conference, the Delhi Cantonment MLA said that he will surrender before the Delhi Police Commissioner today.
Other party leaders including Dilip Pandey, Pankaj Gupta, Sanjay Singh, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Deepak Bajpai were also present at the conference.
Senior party leader Sanjay Singh alleged that the Centre was using the Delhi Police to target the AAP, its MLAs and leaders.
“The Centre is trying to suppress the AAP by arresting our leaders and MLAs. Narendra Modi had resorted to similar tactics in Gujarat. There are several FIRs registered against the BJP leaders, the police is showing promptness only in arresting Commando Surinder Singh.
“In this case, Surinder Singh is a victim and not an offender. The university has issued degrees to thousands of students. If the university turns out to be dubious, then the MLA cannot be blamed for it, ” he said.
Justify his position, Surinder Singh said he had appeared for the papers in 2009, 2010 and 2011 from Eiilm University, Sikkim.
“I was awarded the degree in 2012. I have not submitted any fake degree. But yes, I have made a mistake in my affidavit. While mentioning about the degree in the affidavit, I mentioned it as Sikkim University while it should have been Eiilm Sikkim University.
“So if anyone puts an RTI application in Sikkim University, they will not have any record. This does not mean that my degree is fake, as I have passed from the Eiilm Sikkim University,” the MLA said, displaying his medals on his jacket.
Sanjay Singh alleged that even as the case over the alleged fake degree is in the court, the MLA is often summoned by the ACP or SHO. Referring to a recent rape case in which a police officer is allegedly involved, he also took a jibe at the police saying it was busy arresting AAP leaders, but have turned a blind eye on its officials.
“Instead of police arresting the MLA, we will meet the Delhi Police Commissioner and surrender before him,” he said, alleging that Surinder Singh would be arrested by evening.
