Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attacked RSS and BJP, alleging both did not give any importance to women. He even asked how many women were seen attending the Sangh’s ‘shakhas’. “The BJP’s thinking is that till women are silent they are good, when they start speaking up they try to shut them (women) up,” Gandhi was quoted as saying by PTI at a gathering of students in Gujarat on the second day of his election campaign in the state. “Their organisation is the RSS. How many women are there in the RSS… Have you ever seen any woman in shakhas wearing shorts?” Rahul said in a sarcastic tone, adding, “In the Congress, you will see women at every level in the organisation." He further said, "Their (BJP-RSS) thinking is, as long as women are silent, all is good. But as soon as she opens her mouth, they run to shut her up," according to ANI. Khakhi shorts were the trademark of RSS volunteers, which they used to wear during their drills in the past. However, last year they were replaced by full pants. Rahul also said if Congress comes to power in the state, it will give importance to women and try to resolve their issues. However, Rahul's remark on women not seen wearing Khakhi shorts in RSS 'shakhas' agitated the BJP. Former Gujarat CM and BJP leader Anandiben Patel hit out at the Congress vice-president, seeking an unconditional apology. "Aap Congress ki drishti bata rahe hai. Kya aap yahi dekhte rehte hain kisne kya pehna hai. Ye Gujarat ki mahilao ka apmaan kiya hai aapne. Aap wo shabd wapas lo. Mahilaon se maafi mangon, nahin to pure Gujarat ki mahilaayen ekaththi hokar, Gujarat me rahi-sahi seat bhi aapki kho dengi (You (Rahul) are showing the view of Congress about women. Do you keep on only watching who is wearing what? You have insulted women of Gujarat. Take those words back and say sorry to women, otherwise, all women of Gujarat will protest together, take away even the little number of seats Congress has in the state)," Patel told ANI. "I want to tell the women of Gujarat that this is the view Congress has about women of the state and us, that you should ask the Congress for what to wear," she added which strongly demanding that Congress must apologise.
