Elections 2018 LIVE UPDATES: The poll heat and drama are growing intense in Assembly election-bound states of Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Karnataka as well as in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming byelections. In Bihar, JD(U) has decided not to field candidates for the bypoll seats, while the ‘grand alliance’ partners Congress and RJD are bickering over seat sharing. In Tripura, incumbent chief minister Manik Sarkar is facing a peculiar challenge. Both BJP and Congress have fielded two women candidates, who claim to have a “fair” chance of defeating Sarkar, according to Hindustan Times. There is also a fourth candidate, Jahiruddin of TMC, in fray from Sarkar’s home constituency of Dhanpur. The BJP and CPM candidates are Pratima Bhowmik and Lakshmi Nag respectively.

Interestingly, Bhowmik is contesting against Sarka for the second time after 1998, when Sarkar had become the CM for the first time. Some more interesting developments are taking place in other poll-bound regions.

Both Congress and BJP are attacking the Manik Sarkar government, blaming it for keeping the state backward over the years.

On Wednesday, former Maharashtra CM and Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan told reporters in Agartala: “In the 25-year rule of the CPI(M)-led Left Front, Tripura has become poorer and it is a backward state now. Eight lakh people of the state’s 38 lakh population are unemployed and the government has no scheme to attract investment to the state. There was no modernisation of agriculture also.”

The Minister is not operating on his own,” he said.
