The Election Commission of India has introduced a new standard operating procedure to enable the speedy delivery of EPICs within 15 days. The poll body also announced the formation of a ‘dedicated IT module’ on its recently launched ECINet platform — which will re-engineer the current system and streamline workflow. The updates are part of a wider initiative taken by the Election Commission to streamline the process and ensure the convenience of electors.
“The new system will ensure real-time tracking of each stage right from the EPIC generation by the electoral Registration Officer till the delivery of EPIC to the elector through the Department of Posts. Electors will also receive notifications via SMS at each stage, keeping them informed about the status of their EPICs,” read a press note from the poll body.
What is EPIC?
Indian voters are issued an Elector’s Photo Identity Card (or EPIC) upon registration in the electoral roll. The card contains a unique number that is also considered to be your voter ID card number. The process is mandatory, and the document can serve as identity proof for Indian citizens above the age of 18. A digital version has also been made available in recent years — download-able from the Voter Portal, Voter Helpline mobile App, or NVSP.
