Underworld don Chhota Rajan was brought here on Friday morning after being deported from Bali from where he was taken straight to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Headquarters.
He will be produced in court today for facing trial in various criminal cases registered against him in Delhi and Mumbai.
The most wanted gangster returned to India after being on the run for more than two decades and immediately after his arrival, he was escorted out of the airport under heavy security and taken away in an official car accompanied by heavily armed escort vans.
Rajan will be quizzed by the CBI in order to nail India’s most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, since he has been making explosive claims to know the latter’s whereabouts and has shown an express desire to ‘fight against terrorism’.
The 55-year-old gangster was taken into custody by the CBI after the Maharashtra Government made a surprise announcement yesterday that the entire case related to Rajan will be handled by the CBI and the state government would extend all help to the leading investigating agency, confirming that the gangster would be taken to the national capital and not to Mumbai.
Rajan had earlier expressed his unease at being taken to Mumbai, saying he was in danger from Dawood and his aides and had also alleged that some officials in the Mumbai police are working with India’s most wanted terrorist.
Speaking to reporters before his deportation, Rajan had shown his ‘happiness’ on returning to his ‘motherland’.
His deportation process was supposed to take place on Wednesday but it got delayed due to the presence of ash in the atmosphere following a volcanic eruption.
The 55-year-old underworld don was arrested in Bali on his arrival from Australia on October 25.
He was arrested on the basis of a Red Corner Notice from Interpol and following a tip off by Australian authorities to the Indonesian Police.
