Akhilsh Yadav, the tech-savvy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, had to face a brutal assault from Narendra Modi on Wednesday, that too, in an area he is widely applauded these day – digital ways of communication.  The leader, who is credited for providing a makeover to his party by using digitisation and social media, was ripped apart for what apparently seemed a kiddish goof-up made by Uttar Pradesh Government’s official website http://up.gov.in. While many would call it an administration blunder, the mistake, was apparently done at the first forum one would visit to seek authentic information about the state of 220 million people, or precisely, world’s largest province.

Modi, in a rally at Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria, took a jibe at Akhilesh Yadav’s ‘Kaam Bolta Hai’ catchphrase, and said: “Akhlilesh Ji Ka asli ka kaam, Akhilesh ji ki website bolti hai.(Akhilesh Ji’s actual work is narrated by UP Government’s website)” He added: “UP Government’s own website compares the state’s condition with that of Saharan African, it says life in Uttar Pradesh is short and uncertain resembles Saharan Africa.” Modi, in his trademark style, orated further: “State government’s website says almost all social indicators of the state show that the state stands on 13th or 14th position among the sixteen major states. Bihar, and in some cases Orissa, are the only two states which lag behind U.P.”

In an interview with news agency Reuters, Akhilesh said: “I am taking it a bit beyond Modi: I work.” Well, he certainly does, his makeover of old-ailing SP website into a multimedia forum, tells alot about his concerns towards the use of new media. When you log on to the website, a window, which would generally play Akhilesh’s election campaign video would pop-up, his election theme song (Sapa ka parcham lehrayega) would start to play, a slide show consisting of high-definition images would start playing, and a big image of Akhilesh Yadav will be there to remind that all is done under his leadership. Period. However, on contrary, when you visit Uttar Pradesh government’s website, its completely and old, black and white show, where you would have to excercise your brain to search for some very common topics.

While Modi ripped Akhilesh for the same, it seemed that information was perhaps right at the time it was posted, and nobody from the government bothered to update it as the time passed. The difference in frequency of usage can also be witnessed on Akhilesh’s individual and CMO accounts. While the UP CM is very active in posting tweets about his campaign trails on his individual Twitter handle, his CMOTwitter account has made only two tweet in entire month of February.

However, another fact which should be mentioned here is that dynamic changes in Akhilesh’s campaign, and pro-active use of digital media, only came after he completely took over the reigns of Samajwadi Party in January. Though Government always remained with Akhilesh. This ‘discrimination’ quite surely not intentional from the Akhilesh’s part, but still, one would expect better use of social media from the young CM for the image he portrays – a young, go getter leader.
