Dhaka Attack: 8 things to know about murdered Indian Tarishi Jain

Terrorists attacked a cafe in Dhaka on Friday and the siege lasted almost 12 hours, killing 20 people, most of them foreigners, including an Indian named Tarishi Jain.

Terrorists attacked a cafe in Dhaka on Friday and the siege lasted almost 12 hours, killing 20 people, most of them foreigners, including an Indian named Tarishi Jain.

Tarishi Jain (19) had gone out with two of her friends to one of Dhaka’s favourite hangouts called Holey Artisan Bakery.

A few facts about Tarishi Jain:

1. Tarishi was a student at University of California, Berkeley, and she was home from the US for summer vacations.

2. The cafe where the gunmen attacked is close to Tarishi’s residence in the posh Dhaka neighbourhood of Gulshan.

3. Her father, Sanjeev Jain,had a garment business in Dhaka. He had left Firozabad more than 15-20 years back and both his children were born in Bangladesh.

4. Tarishi was one of the first victims to be identified. Her friends Abinta Kabir and Faraaz Hossain were also killed in the attack.

Abinta was a sophomore at Emory University’s Oxford, Georgia, campus, while Faraaz had graduated from Emory’s Oxford College and was attending the university’s business school.

5. Sources told The Indian Express that, Tarishi was among the hostages who may have been subjected to torture before being killed. “That was apparent from the injuries,” a source said.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in a series of tweets, saying, “I am extremely pained to share that the terrorists have killed Tarushi (the spelling was later found to be Tarishi), an Indian girl who was taken hostage in the terror attack in Dhaka… ”

6. Tarishi’s body was identified by her parents at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka. Indian diplomats accompanied the distraught parents.

7. Tarishi’s last rites are expected to take place in India, when her body arrives to New Delhi on Monday, after completion of legal procedures.

8. Tarishi had come to Firozabad, India last Diwali.
“None of us thought it was the last time we would see her. She was a bright student and a loving daughter,” said her uncle Rajeev.
