Delhi Water Minister Atishi will begin an indefinite hunger strike at noon in Bhogal, south Delhi, demanding the release of 100 million gallons of water daily from Haryana.

In a post on X, the minister said despite all efforts, the Haryana government was not releasing the full share of Delhi’s water.

Prior to the fast, Atishi plans to visit Rajghat at 11 AM to honour Mahatma Gandhi, emphasizing his teachings on ‘Satyagraha’ against injustice.

“I will start ‘Pani Satyagraha’ from today… I will start an indefinite fast at Bhogal, Jangpura from 12 o’clock until the people of Delhi get their rightful share of water from Haryana,” she said on X.

The minister previously alleged that Haryana has withheld 100 million gallons per day of water daily from Delhi for the past two weeks, impacting 2.8 million residents amid an intense heatwave increasing water demand.

On Wednesday, Atishi wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in the water crisis issue in the capital, failing which she would go on an indefinite strike.

Speaking at a press conference, Atishi had said that the water crisis in Delhi was due to Haryana’s actions. She also mentioned that she has written several letters to the Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, however, the BJP-ruled state is yet to release the water share.

She further alleged that despite the Supreme Court acknowledging the water crisis of Delhi, the Haryana government has turned down multiple requests from the Delhi government’s senior officials and the Union Jal Shakti Minister, C R Paatil, also refused to meet AAP MLAs.

Meanwhile, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said that there is no water crisis in Delhi.

“Every state has the right to seek help from the Prime Minister in times of crisis, but there is no water crisis in Delhi.”
