Being the admin of a WhatsApp group turned out to be very costly for a businessman in Delhi. An FIR was registered by Delhi’s Dabri police station against a Delhi based businessman for posting provocative messages on a WhatsApp group which were related to BR Ambedkar. The man booked by the police was the administrator of a WhatsApp Group called ‘Shalin’ which is comprised of 54 members.

It was on Thursday evening when Delhi Police registered the FIR, almost five months after the complaint from a High Court advocate. Santosh Kumar Meena, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police from the Dwarka district said FIR has been registered under sections 153A and 295 of the IPC. He said that this complaint has been registered against a WhatsApp group administrator. The investigation is on. The complaint was filed by Ankush Gautam who said that it was one of his relative who was a member of a WhatsApp group where provocative messages against BR Ambedkar were posted. Ankish Gautam said, “A few months back I met with the relative and he mentioned about the group administrator, who was posting awful things about Ambedkar.”

Gautam said that his relative asked the administrator to not to post provocative messages about Ambedkar. He also informed about the stringent law against such content. Even after informing the WhatsApp group admin multiple times the messages did not stop. It was then Gautam suggested for a legal action against the admin. He said that a “complaint was filed with the Delhi Police and one more with the court.” Gautam also said that he has also sent a copy of his complaint to National SC/ST commission and L-G Anil Baijal.

The Delhi Police said that after receiving the complaint, it was sent to the legal experts before filling the FIR. Police said they are now likely to approach the accused and other members of the WhatsApp group.
