Yashwant Sinha article: The former Finance Minister’s opinion article in the Indian Express, which had criticised the Narendra Modi government over ‘downward spiral of the economy’, has created a political uproar. While Congress and other opposition parties have been using the article to attack the Centre, Union Ministers like Piyush Goyal and Rajnath Singh have claimed India has become the fastest growing economy in the world under the leadership of PM Modi. Now, MoS Civil Aviation and son of Yashwant Sinha, Jayant has debunked the article saying it misses the structural reforms brought in by the central government since 2014. Sinha Jr. said that these measures will create ‘New India’ and provide jobs. Sinha Jr. has also rejected all the allegations levelled against government’s moves like demonetisation, Goods and Services Tax (GST), saying these were path-breaking efforts to formalsie the country’s economy, according to Times of India report. He also claimed that GST and demonetisation are the third generation of reforms. First generation of reforms took place in 1991 and second generation of reforms happened in 1999-2000. Sinha Jr also claimed that third generation of reforms will provide a better life for all Indians, the TOI report said.

Apart from Jayant, in Railway Minister Piyush Goyal led BJP’s counter indicated that the economy is in great shape. “The whole country and the world has seen that under the decisive leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has become the world’s fastest-growing economy for three consecutive years in a row. For the first time in the Indian history, India is driving world growth at all levels,” Goyal said, according to ANI report.

Speaking about the measures taken by the central government, Goyal said the government has brought in unprecedented landmark reforms like Goods and Services Tax (GST). Goyal claimed that GST was never imagined possible in a country of the size and scale of India. “In fact, we are the largest country in the world to have implemented GST…The kind of structural changes we have brought in different aspects of the economy, different aspects of government’s working, breaking the silos within different departments and working as one strong entity with the steadfast purpose of serving the poorest of poor. The poorest of the poor is in the focus of every action of this government,” Goyal said.

Yesterday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had also said the Indian economy is the fastest growing in the world and the country’s credibility has been established in the international arena under the Modi government.
