In a big setback for Dawood Ibrahim family in Mumbai, his younger brother Iqbal Kaskar was detained by Thane police from his residence in a case related to alleged extortion, reported ANI. This is more bad news for Dawood Ibrahim whose assets were targetted by the UK government just a few days ago. Kaskar was picked up by encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, who was recently reinstated and posted with the Thane crime branch’s anti extortion cell, reported India Today. Sharma led the team of Thane Police which arrested Kaskar from his residence in Mumbai today in an extortion case. As per the report, he is presently being questioned by the Thane anti extortion cell officials.
Earlier this month Kaskar was asked to vacate two dilapidated buildings in Mumbai which the authorities said were acquired illegally, reported PTI. He was asked to vacate the Damarwala Building at Pakmodia Street in Bhendi Bazaar and Shabnam Guest House in JJ Marg area, both located in south Mumbai. A notice under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act, 1976 or SAFEMA Act was pasted outside the Damarwala building, asking the occupants to vacate it. A similar notice was also put up at Shabnam Guest House located in JJ Marg area, an official said.
On September 13 this year, Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s assets worth a whopping Rs 43,000 crore (6.7 billion US dollar) were allegedly seized by the UK government, according to India Today report. Ibrahim is a key accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and has been absconding for over two decades.
