As many as seven conmen posing as Income Tax department officers barged into a businessman’s house in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Sunday morning and conducted a raid. According to a report by Indian Express, the scammers entered the house and started searching every nook and corner and later found Rs 20 lakh in cash which the family had kept in their cars. Smelling something fishy, the family called their neighbours and this was when they came to know that the IT officials were con artists. Annoyed and angry residents then started beating them up with a rod before handing them over to police. A video posted on Twitter shows the family thrashing the fraudsters. According to the police, six people have been arrested, while the seventh managed to flee in a car.

The plot seems straight out of the Bollywood hit movie, Special 26 which featured Akshay Kumar and his team doing something similar. The movie was inspired by a 1987 real-life heist when 26 conmen posing as IT officials looted valuables worth Rs 30-35 lakh from a jewellery store in Mumbai.

“Six men identified as Mitesh Kumar (38), Naunyal (45), Yogender Kumar (32), Govind Sharma (45), Amit Aggarwal (35) and Parvinder (21) have been caught and booked under IPC sections pertaining to “impersonating a public servant, kidnapping, trespass, forgery, extortion and assault” at Malviya Nagar police station,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Chinmoy Biswal told Indian Express.

“They came, pretending to be a part of an I-T raid, and started searching the premises. They extorted Rs 20 lakh and kept it in a Tata Safari, which has been seized. However, their seventh accomplice, identified as Kailash, managed to flee in the other car,” Biswal said further.

The police also informed that the conmen arrived at Ramesh Chand Ahuja’s house in Malviya Nagar at around 10 am. Ahuja is a businessman and has a showroom of electronic goods. The report further stated that Ahuja was at his home with his family when these seven men arrived in two cars. They took away the mobile phones of those in house and started searching the place. However, after sometime, one of the family members slipped out and called for help.
