Congress is in a dilemma over Navjot Singh Sidhu in Punjab. While the party wants to give the cricketer-turned-politician a Congress ticket for the upcoming Assembly election in the state, it is not sure as to how to deal with him. This is the reason why the party doesn’t find it surprising when it is informed that Sidhu is also talking to the Aam Aadmi Party for a good deal ahead of the election.

Sidhu was a spinner and an aggressive batsman in the Indian cricket team who could spring up a surprise at any moment. He has maintained the same streak in politics as well. According to IE, the Congress has been cautious about Sidhu because of his unpredictable nature. Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh has several times said it publicly that he would like to welcome Sidhu in his party. However, the Punjab Congress chief is not very much comfortable with Sidhu joining the party. The reason why Sidhu-Congress talk has not gained much speed is Amarinder’s lack of enthusiasm, IE says in its Delhi Confidential section.

Amarinder also fears that giving a prominent role to Sidhu in the party would make it difficult for the Congress to accommodate Manpreet Badal, who enjoys a strong support of people on the ground, unlike Sidhu. A few months ago, Manpreet had merged his party with the Congress.

IE reports that Congress’ offer to Sidhu has been clear if the party wins the election and Amarinder the CM — Sidhu would be made Congress candidate for Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, his wife Navjot Kaur would be made a state minister and his associates, including Bains brothers and Pargat Singh, would get MLA tickets.
