Sonia Gandhi was appointed party's interim president in 2019 after Rahul Gandhi had relinquished the post following the defeat in the Lok Sabha polls that year.

At least 52 party leaders took part in the meeting including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress party may get its new full-time president in September next year and until then, Sonia Gandhi will stay at the helm of the party. The decision was taken during the Congress Working Committee meeting held today. At least 52 party leaders took part in the meeting including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, addressing the media on the outcomes of CWC meeting, said that election of the AICC president will be held between 21st August and 20th September 2022. He added that election of PCC presidents, vice presidents, treasurers, PCC executives and AICC members will be held between July 21 and August 20, 2022. Venugopal said that enrolment of members for organisational polls will start from November 1 and will end on March 31.

He also said that CWC had decided that Congress will undertake mass agitation at ground level across country between November 14f and November 29 against price rise. The Congress Working Committee also passed 3 resolutions – on the political situation, on inflation and on acute agrarian distress and diabolical attack on India’s farmers.

Notably, during the meeting, senior party leaders requested Rahul Gandhi to become the president to which Rahul is believed to have said that he will consider this.

It may be recalled that Sonia Gandhi was appointed party’s interim president in 2019 after Rahul Gandhi had relinquished the post following the defeat in the Lok Sabha polls that year.

“I am, if you will allow me to say so, a full-time and hands on Congress President….,” said Sonia Gandhi.

She also told the party leaders there is no need for party leaders to speak to her through the media as she appreciates frankness. “I have always appreciated frankness. There is no need to speak to me through the media,” she said.

Sending a message to party leaders, Sonia Gandhi said, “The entire organisation wants a revival of the Congress. But his requires unity and keeping the party’s interests paramount. Above all, it requires self-control and discipline. I am acutely conscious of the fact that I have been interim Congress president ever since the CWC, asked me to return in this capacity in 2019.”

Recalling that the Congress had finalised a roadmap for electing a regular Congress chief by June 30 but that deadline was extended indefinitely due to Covid second wave, Sonia Gandhi said that today was the occasion for bringing clarity once and for all on the issue of the organisational polls. A schedule for full-fledged organizational elections had been put before the CWC members, she said.

Sonia Gandhi, former chief Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress chief ministers Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan, Bhupesh Baghel of Chhattisgarh and Charanjit Channi of Punjab attended the meeting. Senior leaders and G23 leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma were among those present at the meeting at the All India Congress Committee headquarters here.
